Layering

Layering

What have I learned about layering?

I have learned that layering is building on top of another work, to add to the the story are the meaning behind the art work.  For instance the artist Kara Walker used layering in her art work The Emancipation Proclamation she drew figures on large pieces of black paper and then cut them out to make silhouettes. She then put the put the silhouettes on black walls and projected scenes for her silhouettes.
Then when The Emancipation Proclamation was displayed in the  National Museum of XXI Century Arts. But layering doesn't always have to be used for deeper meaning. Other time layering can be also be used to add detail or expression to an artist work.  In particular David Salle uses layering as way to add more depth and details in his painting. In Salle painting a "Portrait of Beverly", Salle paints the box of cigarettes as if the coming of the painting, while the truck in the feels farther away.

How do contemporary artist use layering in their artwork?

Contemporary artist, like Takashi Murakami use layering as way to capture the audience attention and to keep their eyes moving all throughout the painting or to draw attention to a certain area in the painting. For instance in Takashi painting, "A Picture Of The Blessed Lion That Stares At Death" uses layering to emphasize the bridge of skeletons that the lion stands on. The the lion and the bridge are painted on top of the layered on top of another painting. But even the background is layered. To the left and the right on the lion the are pixilated areas that were layered on top of the painting. However though, contemporary artist use layering for than emphases. As stated earlier layering can be used as a way to grab the audience attention to keep their eyes dancing throughout the painting. For example in Takashi painting "Doraemon and D I" layers flowers on top of flowers to give the feeling of depth but to also the painting keeps the eyes moving by using different colors of flowers and different sizes of flowers. Takashi also layers on top of the flowers two figures, a door and himself as if they are stickers.

How might   layering be used   in your own art?

I could use layering in my own fil, by using it in my third   film  where my character   finally decide to give up her   addiction and   when she's getting ready to give up her addiction I can layer on the different videos   showing that show the pros of her   addiction and how they have helpe her. But also show the cons of her addiction and   how they   have caused her pain and some of her darkest times. I could   also use   layering to show my character spiral out of control with her emotions.

Is there something you find in your investigation that specially interested you or inspired you?

During layering investigation there was no in particular the interested me, but it did give some ideas on how I can use it to make a scene more interesting and more in depth to keep the audience interested. Such as I can use layering in the scenes that show my characters emotion or as a turning point in her life.
