What is Animation?

Animation is a method used to manipulate objects to appear as moving images. Traditional animation are hand painted or drawn on transparent celluloid sheets. Today though most animation are computer generated.

Types of Animation

There are over 31 types of animation styles, all varying from stop motion to zoetrope to 3D animations. But will only be going over the top five styles of animation. Traditional animation, 3D animation,  2D animations, Stop motion, and manga.

Traditional Animation

Traditional animations was created in 1877 by Emil Reynaud.  In traditional animation you create each frame manually with pencil and paper. The first series of Tom and Jerry were created by traditional animation.

3D Animation

3D animations are made with computer graphics and visual affects. The first attempts of 3D image was in 1961, but the first 3D animation did come out until 1971 and it was a simple animation of Ed Calmull ( The creator of the video) hand moving. A modern day example of 3D animation would be Disney movie Moana.

2D Animation

The first 2D animation was created in 1906 but didn't become popular until much later thanks to Walt Disney. Now 2D animations are mainly used for advertisement,  promotional, and explainer videos. An explain of of 2D animation is The Little Mermaid.

Stop Motion

Stop motion is when you take several pictures of a moving object. Before the photos would then be glued together on one track. Now the photos can edited into any basic software. Many of Tim Burtons animated movies are stop motions.

Manga

Manga originally generated in comics but was later turn into animations using 2D technology. Traditional manga is used in black and white, but using color is acceptable. An example of this is the tv series Attack on Titans.
