Transitions
Match cut
A match cut is any transition audio or visual element used from the pervious scene that match similar elements used in the next scene. They can be shapes, compositions, colors, movement, or sound. A match cut can be used to bridge time. For instance in the opening scene from Indian Jones and The Last Crusade uses a match cut to bridge time.
Passing Transition or Pass By Effect
The passing transition is when a moving character or object is used a transition to the next scene. It can also use the camera itself to move to the next scene. In the this scene from Toy Story 2 Jessie is used as way to transition to the next scene.
J-Cut and L - Cut
The J cut is used when the audio for the next scene starts playing before the scene starts. An example of this is used in the movie interstellar. J Cuts are usually used in dialogue but can be used in flashbacks. In L cuts the audio from the previous scene transfers over into the next scene. This is usually for narration, for example in the movie Dunkirk.
